'I am the only sensible one in happy bhag Jayegi' family, wedding pictures, age, height, weight, biography
While Happy Bhag Jayegi is being awaited due to Diana Penty’s comeback after Cocktail (2012), another female who is winning attention is Momal Sheikh. As Abhay Deol’s love interest in the film, the actress has made her presence felt in the film’s promo. Hailing from Pakistan, married and a mother, Momal is happy that she is enjoying the best of all worlds in her personal as well as professional life.
What made you choose Happy Bhag Jayegi as your debut Bollywood flick?
I was given a narration of the film and when I got the script, I read it five times. I realized that it was a pretty decent role. What is truly interesting is that my character, Zoya, takes decisions for all others in the story (smiles). While everyone around me is in the haphazard mode, I am the only sensible one around. She is there to gauge the situation and then make good for everyone.
Did the fact that Happy Bhag Jayegi is based in Pakistan further make you happy about picking it up?
Yes, it was easier for me to adopt. If the role had been of an Indian with Hindi as the main language, I would have asked for more time to prepare and to adapt to the character and the culture. However, since they wanted a Pakistani girl jo Urdu achche andaaz mein bol sake and someone who can take a stand, I was game for it. Uss lihaaz se mere liye aasaan tha yeh film karna.
I am told that the filmmakers were looking for recommendations from your father (veteran Pakistani actor Javed Sheikh).
Yes. When he was offered this film, he was also asked to find an actress from Pakistan. My father gave them a few names but he never gave my name. Then they happened to find some pictures of mine on the Internet and went back to him asking about my details. My father told them that he has never recommended his children since he wants them to earn a career on their own. Nonetheless, they contacted me and it was only then that I got to know about this entire incident (laughs).
In the film, you are a fierce, modern, independent Pakistani girl. How similar are you to the character?
Well, I would not say that this is exactly my personality. Yes, somewhere I am independent and take my decisions. However, at times, I do take advice. I am a little different from Zoya. She is completely in love with Abhay (Deol).
Abhay is known to be a natural in front of the camera. How was it to be paired with him?
He is a great actor and has done his homework very well. (Smiles) I was nervous though that I would be working with Abhay. I was told that mujhe Abhay ko Urdu lehza sikhaana hai aur kabhi kabhi tok bhi dena hai. He is a great co-star and while I prompted him a bit on Urdu, he helped me a lot as well. We used to do many rehearsals together, especially for the comic timing. He is very professional and soon we became friends. In fact, things were very easy with Diana, Ali (Fazal) and other co-stars as well. It was great fun to be working with them.
The film is produced by Aanand L. Rai. Have you seen his films like Tanu Weds Manu and its sequel.
Of course, I have seen his films. Before signing Happy Bhag Jayegi, I had my own boundaries that I won’t be doing this or that. Then Aanand asked me to read the script at the least. After reading it, I realized that when it comes to Aanand and his films, as an actor you end up doing the right thing.
