ISLAMABAD: Legendary actress Shamim Ara passed away in a hospital at the age of 78 on Friday after prolonged illness.
She had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Southampton, London, and was in a coma since a few years after a brain surgery. Her relatives said that she passed away on Friday morning.
The actress had been in coma since 2010 after undergoing brain surgery.
Ara had an illustrious career and was a leading actress of her time. She was born in 1938 in Aligarh (India) and starred in a movie for the first time in 1956 with the film ‘Kunwari Bewa.”
During her stint as an actress, she starred in many super-hit films and was adorned for her acting prowess.
She was bestowed with the prestigious Nigar awards four times for her stellar performance in movies.
Some of the prominent films she had worked in were ‘Pal Do Pal,’ ‘Lakhon Mai Ek’ and ‘Salgira.’
Her first film tanked at the box office but her role had the industry buzzing. Shortly after that, she got a string of hit films under her name, such as ‘Devdas,’ ‘Humraz’ and others. She was also an acclaimed director.
Like many movie stars, actress Resham expressed her sadness at the demise of Shamim Ara. She said that she had a close relationship with her and found her to be a woman of character.
She said she had worked with her in a handful of films. “She worked for over 30 years in the Pakistani film industry as a director and heroine.
When we were shooting ‘Pal Do Pal,’ it never felt like I was working with a director, the way she spoke, the way she fixed my “dupatta” (shawl), the way she told us how to deliver dialogues, it was like a mother instructing her child.”
Renowned artist Bushra Ansari said: “When you hear such news, you feel an era is slipping away from us; she did great work throughout her life, with dedication. She was a beautiful, delicate and a charming woman.”
