In the month of August both Pakistan and India celebrate Independence Day. Every year Pakistan celebrates on the 14th August while India celebrates a day later on the 15th. It seems that the film industry is trying to unite both countries through art with artists travelling to both countries.
BizAsia will look at 10 Pakistani celebrities that have worked in the Indian film industry.
Salma Agha is not only a famous singer but also an actress that has had the chance to work in both the Indian and Pakistani film industry. The talented artist has worked in films like ‘Nikaah’ (1982) and ‘Kasam Paida Karnewale Ki’ (1984).
The green eyed beauty gave Bollywood many memorable songs such as dil ke armaan from ‘Nikaah’ and jhoom jhoom baba from ‘Kasam Paida Karnewale Ki’.
Although she may not have returned to films her work is still fresh in the minds of many.
A legend of Pakistan, Nadeem Baig has worked in the Pakistani film industry for decades. Known for portraying various characters he is an institution in itself when it comes to acting.
Not many people know this but Baig has worked in Bollywood in the past. The film was called ‘Gehri Chot- Urf Durdesh’ (1983) it starred the late Parveen Babi and Raj Babbar as well as Bangladeshi actress Bobita. Baig played the role of a hitman named Tony who is ordered to kidnap a girl but later falls in love with her.
Imran Abbas has made a name for himself in the modelling world as well as in TV dramas. ‘Mera Naam Yousuf Hai’ (2015) and ‘Alvida’ (2015) are two recent dramas that have done extremely well in Pakistan.
His debut film ‘Creature 3D’ (2014) was said to be the first of its kind, a 3D horror film. Unfortunately the film failed to do well at the box office and not even Bipasha Basu could help save the film. The only thing that the audiences actually remember about the film is the romantic, rain song ‘Saawan Aaya Hai’.
From acting in dramas to modelling in music videos, there is no shortage of talent when it comes to Ali Zafar. Music is his passion be it song writing, singing or even creating music. Another skill this musician possesses is painting and sketching. He often likes to share his work with his fans via his Instagram page.
With hits like ‘Tere Bin Laden’ (2010) and ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’ (2011) no wonder Zafar is getting film offers continuously.
So far he has worked with some of the biggest names in Bollywood such as Katrina Kaif, Ranveer Singh and even Govinda.
Famous for his drama serials in Pakistan, Fawad Khan is hot property. He has already worked in two Bollywood films and is currently working on more projects as we speak.
He was last seen in the film ‘Kapoor And Sons’ (2016) alongside Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. His role of a man who wants to reveal his true self but fears of the consequences was appreciated a lot by the audiences.
Mawra Hocane has made a name for herself in Pakistan in such a short space of time. She has acted in dramas as well as doing modelling for certain brands. Last year she began her journey in the Indian film industry with the romantic saga ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ (2016). The film also introduced Harshvardhan Rane.
The pairing of these two newcomers was liked by the audiences and there were many who said that they couldn’t help but cry while watching the film as it was so emotional.
She is a producer and an actress who has worked in both film and TV. Zeba Bakhtiar has been lucky to have worked in both Bollywood and Pakistani films. She has worked with various artists such as Saud, Shaan Shahid, Sanjay Dutt and Jackie Shroff.
A beautiful actress unlike any other she rose to fame with her debut film ‘Henna’ (1991). The film was something that the late Raj Kapoor had begun but due to his death his son Randhir Kapoor had to complete the film.
Bakhtiar played the title role of a naïve, Pakistani girl who lives in her own dream world. When Chandar (Rishi Kapoor) comes into her life she gradually falls in love with him only to realise that he is already engaged to a girl in India. After that she and her family decide that they will help him at any cost to return to his homeland even if it means losing their lives.
The film showed love and humanity and till this day is regarded as Bakhtiar’s greatest roles.
Pakistani cricketer Mohsin Khan tried his hand at acting but then decided to take a break from this field. In Pakistan he worked in films that consisted of drama such as ‘Ghunghat’ (1996) and ‘Beta’ (1994).
In Bollywood he got the chance to work with the likes of Sanjay Dutt in films like ‘Fateh’ (1991) and ‘Mahaanta’ (1997) as well as other popular artists of the 90’s. It is said that the film ‘Saathi’ (1991) which starred Aditya Pancholi gave both actors a lot of success. Mahesh Bhatt directed this film which was about how two childhood friends grow apart due to misunderstandings caused by enemies.
Call her a singer, an actress or a model at the end of the day creativity is in her blood. Meesha Shafi calls herself a rock star and lives her life boldly with confidence.
Presently the period drama named ‘Mor Mahal’ (2016) that she has worked in is doing extremely well. It is said to be the most expensive drama yet to be made in Pakistan. ‘Bhaag Milka Bhaag’ (2013) saw Shafi as an athlete named Perizaad who befriends ‘The Flying Sikh’. It isn’t the first time that Shafi has worked in a film, in fact she worked in Mira Nair’s thriller ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ (2012) and the Pakistani film ‘Waar’ (2013).
Javed Sheikh is a big name in Pakistan from working in films to dramas this man has attained a lot of respect for his work. He has also made his mark as a director and has created many successful films such as ‘Yeh Dil Aap Ka Hua’ (2002) and ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ (1999).
Usually this actor is seen in Bollywood films playing the role of an actor’s father like Shah Rukh Khan in ‘Om Shanti Om’ (2007) and Ranbir Kapoor in ‘Tamasha’ (2015).
