With so many channels coming out these days, the viewers have a lot of choice in terms of what play should they be watching in the middle of the week. However, what has gotten us interested is the latest offering from Hum TV, Shehzad Kashmiri’s direction titled Saya-e-Deewar Bhi Nahi. In what looks like a sober family drama, saw its first episode recently with a promises to be worth our time as it shows a family which has values, and cherishes decisions made by elders in the house without throwing any tantrums.

The play, which has been written by Qaisra Hayat, is based on her novel of the same title. The cast includes the two most respected actors in our industry, Jamal Shah and Irfan Khoosat, who are playing best friends. Whereas Shah Sahab ( Jamal Shah) is a very dignified character who treats his wife and daughters with lots of love and respect and dotes on his grandchildren who have come to visit him along with their mother, Tabbasum ( Shamayal Tareen), the family is a down-to-earth family, which is different from the usual cliched stories seen otherwise.

Interestingly, after playing the evil Imtiaz inUdaari , Ahsan Khan is also back in a role which suits him best, the chocolate hero named Haider, who is in love with his cousin, Shela, played by Naveen Waqar. Shela is a bubbly and a spoilt girl, who always gets her waym but never does she cross the line with her parents. Haider is Shela and Tabbasum’s ‘Taya’s‘ son, who passed away when he was young, so Shah Sahab raised him as his own and considers him a very important member of his family.

While Shela seems madly in love with Haider, she cannot comprehend how she will live without him once he goes abroad for studies. However things take a turn for the worse when the family tells their daughter to stay away from Haider as his father had already fixed his marriage with someone else before he died, and Haider would want to fulfil his father’s wishes. How will Haider react once he finds out he cannot marry Shela? For that we have to tune in to see the next episode.

The play, even though is an episode old, promises to have a meaningful story based on family values, which will be a good change, as it is not important to always have something out of this world. Sometimes simple stories are also needed, which the entire family can sit and watch, and SDBN is exactly that.

Direction by Shehzad Kashmiri, is top notch as it would be as he has proved his competence time and time again with the movie Bin Roye, and his cinematography in plays like Humsafar and Bilqees Kaur, to name a few. Saya-e-Deewar Bhi Nahi is an ideal mid week play as it doesn’t emotionally charge you up nor does it make you laugh out loud, instead it just makes you sit back comfortably with a cup of tea and enjoy a good story, every Wednesday at 8 pm only on Hum TV.
