Mumbai: After banning movies like ‘Phantom’ and ‘Udta Punjab,’ which depicted on dark topics and apparently showed Pakistan in negative light, looks like Pakistan is not ‘happy’ even with portrayal of love and all good in the recent Bollywood movie ‘Happy Bhaag Jayegi.’
As per recent reports, the Diana Penty, Abhay deol and Jimmy Shergill starrer movie has been banned in Pakistan for its scene showing the portrait of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Pakistan’s Father of the Nation.
The censor board of Pakistan, Central Board of Film Censors (CBFC), also had an issue with the same scene. Piyush Mishra’s portrayal as a Pakistani policeman also did not go down well with the Board. Instead of asking for scenes to be cut from the movie, the Board decided to ban the movie.
In an interview to Hindustan Times, the ‘Happy Bhag Jayegi’ producer Anand L. Rai was quoted saying, “The censor board of Pakistan saw the film and they loved it. They wanted us to cut a minor part of the film. We agreed to it. Initially, I was told that the film is clean. Later, we were informed that a Ministry in Pakistan had objected to the film. As a filmmaker, the only greed I have is that the movie should reach a larger audience. The political reason for which a film is banned has nothing to do with a common man.”
The movie ‘Happy Bhag Jayegi’ portrays love across the border. The female lead, Diana Penty, runs away from her marriage and lands accidentally in Pakistan where she meets the protagonist, Abhay Deol and their love story takes shape.
‘Happy Bhag Jayegi,’ directed by Mudassar Aziz, was released on Friday 19 and received a poor opening. With the ban in place in Pakistan, can we say, “Happy Bhag Nahi Payegi”?
