Why is Peshawar such an important city to Bollywood?

Peshawar (capital of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan) has a special connection with Bollywood. According to a Local historian, Ibrahim Zia it is because:

ShahRukh Khan (SRK), mega superstar of the cine world has his roots in the city of Peshawar, Pakistan. Shahrukh’s entire paternal family lives in Shah Wali Qataal area of Peshawar’s famous Qissa Khwani Bazaar. The Qissa Khwani Bazaar (Street of Story-tellers) extends from west to east in the heart of the city of Peshawar. Qissa Khwani Bazaar is lined with its traditional ‘Kehwa khanas’, stalls of Tikka and Chapli Kabab and dry fruit shops.

Within a 200m radius in this area are located the ancestral homes of three of Bollywood’s all-time great stars – Shah Rukh Khan, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor.

Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar in 2013, requested ShahRukh Khan to visit Pakistan, which he appreciated and took positively.

ShahRukh Khan (SRK) said,

“My family is from Peshawar and few of them still live there. I would love to come to Peshawar and bring my children over because my father took me when I was 15. Then he passed away. I still have some of the greatest memories of the time I spent with my father in Peshawar, Karachi and Lahore. I just wish that I could take my children there someday.”

ShahRukh Khan’s father was born and raised in Peshawar. He was a die hard Indian nationalist and was active in student politics and had affiliation with All Indian National Congress. He moved to Delhi in 1948. Taj Muhammad graduated from Edwards College Peshawar (higher education institution in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan). Bollywood superstars Raj Kapoor’s father Prithvi Raj Kapoor also studied from the same college.

Shah Rukh Khan’s paternal side of family is still living in Peshawar. Shahrukh’s eldest cousin, Maqsood Ahmed told India Times that,

“We feel proud of Shah Rukh whose fans give us exceptional regard when they come to know that we are his cousins”

Maqsood Ahmed runs his own business enterprise of bamboo ladders, just close to his house in Shah Wali Qataal.

Suriya Begum (daughter of the Muhammad Gama, the elder brother of Khan’s father Taj Muhmmad) has recently passed away in the same area of Shah Qali Qatal. Her daughter Noor Jehan (Munni), who went along with her husband Asif to Mumbai some years ago where they had a great time with Shah Rukh and met many film stars and watched his film shoots. They were warmly welcomed by their cousin, Shah Rukh Khan.

Noor Jahan named her son (12-year-old ) after his famous uncle, and he proudly calls himself Shah Rukh Khan 2.

Shah Rukh Khan is the owner of a cricket franchise, kolkata knight riders representing Kolkata in the Indian Premier League.

Maqsood Ahmed said that Shahrukh visited Peshawar twice, along with his father. Shah Rukh made his first visit in 1978 when he was 13 years old and then in 1980, when he stayed with his family for a month in Peshawar. Shahrukh Khan visited the following places during his trip to Peshawar.

Torkham is a city located on the Durand Line (Afghanistan-Pakistan broder). The city connects Nangarhar province of Afghanistan with Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Highway 7 connects Torkham to Kabul through Jalalabad. On the Pakistani side, the border crossing is at the end of the N-5 National Highway, which connects it to Peshawar in the east and further connects it to Islamabad by other routes.

Swat is a beautiful river valley located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan. The capital of Swat is Saidu Sharif, but the main town in the Swat valley is Mingora.

The valley is populated mostly by ethnic Pashtuns and Gujjar and Kohistani communities. Pashto, Gojri, Torwali and Kohistani are the major languages spoken in the valley.

Michni , known for Michni Fort is located 28.4km away from Peshawar. Maqsood Ahmed claims that, “We also visited Michni where Shahrukh swam in River Kabul.”

The Kissa Khwani Bazaar is a bazaar of Peshawar, in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwaprovince of Pakistan. It was termed as the Piccadilly of Central Asia” by Traveller Lowell Thomas (province Gazetteer) and Peshawar’s British commissioner Herbert Edwardes.

In the old times, professional story tellers used to recite ballads and tales of war and love at this very street. They used to come at the Qisa Khwani street and would go to an inn, sat around fire, sipping Qahwa (local tea) and used to tell stories. Thus the bazar got its name “the Bazaar of Story Tellers.”

Legendary Bollywood actor, Dilip Kumar (Muhammad Yusuf Khan) was born in Qissa Khwani Bazaar in 1922. He has received Nishan-e-Pakistan (the highest civilian award) and Padma Vibhushan is (the second-highest Indian civilian award)

In 1973 Indian super star Shahrukh Khan visited Pakistan with his family. Shahrukh Khan was at that time eight years old and was not famous as he is now. Shahrukh Khan was eight year old at that time. The below is the photo of Shahrukh Khan when he visited Swat with his family.

Shahrukh Khan on many occasions has said that his forefather belongs to Peshawar. Some of the people in Peshawar have claimed that they are cousins of Shahrukh Khan.

Shahrukh Khan was born on 2nd November, 1965 and is also known as King (Baadshah) of Bollywood and SRK. Shahrukh Khan after doing his graduating with a bachelor’s degree in economics, started his career appearing in theatre and several television serials in the late 1980s.
