Bollywood mogul Karan Johar’s woes continued to escalate when cinema owners of four states declared on Friday that they would not release the filmmaker’s ambitious biggie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM) on Diwali.

Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) said on Friday the film will not be screened in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Goa, in the wake of growing demand for a ban on Pakistani artistes.

Film exhibition in the four mentioned states is controlled by COEAI.

“The association is not going to screen any movie (featuring Pakistani a artiste) and the decision implies from today until things get normal,” COEAI president Nitin Datar said at a press conference in Mumbai.

He insisted no politician or political party had influenced the call for banning the film in these states.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil starring Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles was scheduled to open on October 28.

Bollywood watchers were looking forward to an interesting box office clash on that date between Johar’s film and Ajay Devgn’s self-directed Shivaay.

The COEAI announcement now puts a question mark on the release of Johar’s film.

“Keeping in mind the patriotic feelings and the national interest of our country, we request all our members and exhibitors to refrain from screening movies which have involvement of any Pakistani artiste, technicians, directors, music directors etc.

We are also in the process of requesting other associations connected with the film industry to support the sentiments in the best interest of our nation.”

Diwali traditionally marks the biggest weekend for the film trade, and is normally reserved for the most important releases. While not releasing Johar’s film would definitely affect the film trade negatively, Datar warned losses would be bigger if halls incurred damage owing to protester fury.

Karan Johar’s office was unwilling to issue a comment when contacted. “We are not ready with a statement for the media at this point,” a spokesperson said.
