Over the last few weeks, there has been a furore in Bollywood over the casting of Pakistani actors in films, in light of the current political tension between India and Pakistan. There were rumours that the makers of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raees had replaced its leading lady, Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, due to political pressure. But the latest reports suggest the makers have decided to complete shooting at an undisclosed location, most likely to be Abu Dhabi, since flying Khan to India right now would be unsafe. The makers have taken this bold decision in the hope that by the time the movie is ready for release in January 2017, relations between the two countries will have improved. Since Khan only had a few scenes left to shoot for Raees, the producers felt that replacing her would be a very expensive proposition and delay the film further. — Sonali Kokra

Pierce Brosnan apologises to Indians for endorsing a tobacco-based product

It was just a few weeks ago that Hollywood actor Pierce Brosnan shocked Indians by appearing in a print and television advertisement for Pan Bahar, a tobacco company. The ad created an uproar, as advertising of tobacco-based products is banned in India. On the weekend Brosnan apologised to the Indian community, slamming the company for deceptive and unauthorised use of his images that implied he was endorsing its entire product line, even though he had only agreed to advertise a “breath freshener/tooth whitener, all-natural, containing neither tobacco, areca nut (supaari), nor any other harmful ingredient”. In an interview with People magazine, the former James Bond star said: “Having endured, in my own personal life, the loss of my first wife and daughter as well as numerous friends to cancer, I am fully committed to supporting women’s health care and research programmes that improve human health and alleviate suffering”. The ads have been pulled off, since then. — Sonali Kokra

Nobel committee says it is up to Dylan if he collects literary prize

The committee that controversially awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature to Bob Dylan says it is up to the American singer-songwriter whether he attends the prize-giving ceremony later this year or not. The notoriously media-shy Dylan has not yet made any comment on the prize, despite repeated attempts by the Swedish Academy to contact him, since naming him the winner on October 13. According to the Swedish media, Academy member Per Wastberg said that if Dylan remained silent, it would be “rude and arrogant”. The Academy, however said Wastberg’s comments did not reflect their view. “The author awarded the Noble Prize makes up his or her own mind regarding the ceremonies involved in the presentation of the prize,” Sara Danius, Permanent Secretary of the Academy, said in a statement. “The Swedish Academy has never held a view on a prize winners decision in this context, neither will it now, regardless of the decision reached.” The Academy gave Dylan, 75, the prize for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”. – Reuters

Deadpool sequel loses director

Deadpool director Tim Miller has quit the in-development sequel to the movie citing “creative differences” between himself and the film’s star and co-producer Ryan Reynolds. The first movie killed it at the global box office last year — particularly impressive for an R-rated film — however sources close to the new film say Reynolds and Miller have repeatedly clashed over the direction of the sequel. Producers Fox say the parting of ways is amicable, and Miller will immediately continue working for them as director of Influx, an adaptation of Daniel Suarez’s sci fi novel that is expected to be the first in a trilogy of films. — The National staff

She says their wedding plans are already underway, reports femalefirst.co.uk Asked if the couple has set a wedding date, Kerr told Paris Match magazine: “It’ll be next year. I can’t wait”. Though Kerr, 33, was overwhelmed by happiness when Spiegel popped the question, she said she wasn’t expecting him to propose. “[Was I expecting it?] Absolutely not. He said to me, ‘Miranda, I’m telling you now, this is the first and last time I’m going to kneel down in front of you’. I was terribly nervous and emotional, trembling with happiness,” she said. — IANS
