At the time when Pakistani films making is mushrooming and more and more producers and directors are coming into scene with various aims in making varieties of movies for film fans that are expecting too much; a just released movie, ‘Rahm’ has disappointed them a lot.
The director Ahmed Jamal with his acting team that is comprised over some of the renowned actors like Sajid Hassan and Sanam Saeed and few more to name has presented a motion picture that is insipid from cinematography, languished from direction view, with tasteless narration of the story.
Believe me, a film that depicts old time Lahore when no communication and travel luxuries were even existed; characters has been filmed traveling in Mercedes Benz models with using Apple and Android mobile devices in their hands.
Basically, ‘Rahm’ story has been taken William Shakespeare’s drama, ‘Measure for Measure. You know, it is an Urdu version of that drama in which Sanam Saeed, Sajid Hassan, Nayer Ejaz and Seerat Jaffery have played important roles. The story of the film is about hypocrisy in a corruption age. Sanam Saeed plays a pauper sister of a man who is convicted for raping a girl. The only way his sister can save his life is that she will have to offer herself to the city governor for one night stand. You know, sex as bribe. Although, some of the senior stars have been seen impressive in their respective roles but the overall aura of the story due to poor direction is extremely weaker. Only character that played by Sanam Saeed is quiet impressive not because of the direction but it felt that Sanam has left no stone unturned to fulfill the expectation of her fan.
Mahmood Jamal, who is the writer of the film, perhaps is failed at his debut writing for the film in impressing the audience. As far as it concerns about dialogue; I’m afraid Mahmood Jamal is also responsible for poorer presentation of Urdu dialects.
At the time when Bollywood movies are banned and that people want to watch more and more Pakistani movies, ‘Rahm’ with lack of impressive or even an [average] performance and dialogues is like a suicide attack on film fans’ curiosity and film loving.
In short, Rahm is neither a documentary, nor it has a drama or filming taste. It can be called a below average theatrical struggle that has brought for viewers a time wasting, frustration and… extreme disappointments.
Cinema goers who have been going to watch, Rahm’ ask questions like what an earth did this producer need to find an opportunity in film making. They ask what message has been conveyed to the people of the society by ridiculous portraying of a society that in terms of cinematography, story and depiction has no power.
Believe me; in its first show which was a complete flop, half of the audience in cinema hall kept hooting and calling WTF to their expectation… uttering a loud clamorous shout left the running movie in just twenty minutes.
Film like Rahm will negative impact on the audience for their excitement about Pakistani movies. Such films can be damaging and a real disaster for people whose minds are being made up for keep waiting for every next Pakistani movie.
