'Star Wars' Making Good on Its Diversity Promise? One Franchise Actor Believes So family, wedding pictures, age, height, weight, biography
Star Wars is helping make Hollywood diverse. Riz Ahmed, a Pakistani-British actor cast in Rogue One, says so.
Star Wars Has a Hand in Diversifying Hollywood
Diversity in Hollywood is a big issue. Take for example last year’s Oscars controversy. A lot of people complained that it was too white that they used the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite to voice their disappointment and displeasure.
Cinema Blend said that there are many people who feel that the bigwigs in Hollywood are not putting much effort in representing different communities.
However, they may have forgotten to look at a major franchise. Because there is one that has taken big steps in remedying that problem.
To make a point, the latest film in the George Lucas-creation franchise had a woman and two men of color at the forefront. And upcoming standalone movie, Rogue One, will feature a very varied slate of actors.
Riz Ahmed said that is just the franchise moving towards the future and embracing the global market. The Pakistani-British actor also praised it, saying that it is a leader in making Hollywood a more diverse place.
Though the first movies of the franchise have been dominantly white and male, The Force Awakens made big changes by being more inclusive.
Diversity On- and Off-Screen
Kathleen Kennedy, the head honcho of Lucasfilm, said that audiences can look forward to diverse faces in the upcoming film. She added that the changes will not just happen on-screen, but behind the scenes as well.
Although the director for Star Wars: Rogue One is a male, Kennedy said that Lucasfilm is doubling its efforts to find a female director. He explained to Variety that they need one with experience. That is because the franchise is big, and it cannot be simply handled by one without a lot or directing chops.
But since there are not many opportunities for women in directing big projects, Kennedy said they are focusing on identifying promising female directors.
